Secret Diary

Dear Diary, Giggidy giggidy! Christmas is right around the corner and I haven't posted a thing in ages. Forgive me for my lack of determination. These past few months have been action packed. Full time employment was thoroughly kicking my ass over the summer and I lost all my free time. Thankfully, I quit the Nazi regime and am now officially unemployed. Just in time for gift giving season? Maybe not so much. Anyways, more free time means more free music for you! Deep within my arsenal of music and videos, I decided that french performer College would do us all some good this holiday season. Born in 1979, David Grellier takes the intensity of 80s film soundtracks mixed with the reality of American TV Shows and transforms the two into a very Night Rider-Esque sound that often makes me space out and forget my surroundings. This effect is meant to be an echo of the cinematic themes of his childhood and it certainly spills over into the lives of his many listeners.
In 2007, David created The Valerie Collective with friends Anoraak, The Outrunners, Minitel Rose, Russ Chimes and Maethelvin. The collective have been captivating the eyes and ears of many in the blog world as they aim to promote their music and musical values through blogs and online resources. Touring many European Capitol's this year has proven to be a step in the right direction for the collective as they continue to produce music for fast-lane lifers and music minds alike. This christmas, pop in College's Secret Diary Mix and do the egg nog boogie with your family and friends. After all, isn't that what Christmas is truly about? Check out College on myspace for more great mix's and upcoming shows!

The Wooden Sky

Gobble Gobble! Thanksgiving's come and gone. The tune's can't stop! Enjoy this video from The Wooden Sky and be sure to check their myspace for tour dates and new music! Be sure to take in the Owen video as well. A true favourite of mine for years now, Owen comes from the more familiar band American Football who unfortunately no longer make music together. You can also find updates on his music on myspace and I highly suggest you take in as much of his music as you can! Voila!

Catch Me

Tame One-Catch Me Featuring Del The Funky Homosapian

I just caught this prelude Miami Horror video online tonight and thought I'd throw it up for you all to enjoy. If only I was in Australia under the boardwalk waiting for a crazy cute Aussie bird to run away with. That would be the day! I think i'll write a song and call it 'Australia Dreaming'. The Beachboys would really be pissed! On a different note, I've been really vibin' Da Ol' Jersey Bastard album by Tame One. The three feature tracks totally do wonders for me right now. I can't get over Mr. Turner on 'Move'. How drunk is that guy!? Anyway, if you need me you can 'catch me on the ave' with a blunt and a bag, dumpin' the tab just about to jump in a cab'. Enough said. Get up, dig the prelude and the featured tracks above. You'll be happy you did! For all thats gold, young and old, I salute you!

Quickie

These tracks are going up on the b-line because I'm nearly late for work. I came across these three lastnight and you expect more content from them all in the near future. Julian Casablanca's '11th Dimension' has me searching near and far for more great music off his upcoming album. Meroz comes at us with a dandy titled 'Your Lover' that really gets me going places and finally High Five with a MJ tribute track titled 'Way To Go'. Be sure to cop these three and start your day out right!

Woods

When I wake up in the morning yearning for some jam band tunage, I reach for the rearhouse music men who speak to us under the moniker of Woods. Their album Songs of Shame has been racking serious play counts around here lately and I urge you to get your day going with their latest. Be sure to give their myspace some time and get to know this cool trio. The featured video accentuates their falsetto lead Jeremy Earl who hits them high on the track Rain On. The Acoustic Session was recorded in early April 2009 at 'Le Grenier' in Dijon, France. Look to the woods this fall my friends!!

Only Built For Cuban Linx Pt. 2

Let's toast to the fallen and the brand new. Raekwon's Only Built For Cuban Linx PT. 2 dropped early September 2009 and it's a treat to Wu-Fans, to say the least. It's not easy being the best. Coming hard on track after track, Raekwon's newest addition to the wu-tang collection is a back to the streets hip-hop long play that alot of people have been missing. The usual suspects can be found on various tracks and some new comers. In true-Wu form, Raekwon's dropped an ode to ODB track titled 'Ason Jones' which I've taken a liking to and provided for all of you to sample. I hope you get out and bump this album. Get yourself a g-bag filled like Raek's got in the caption and play it loud.

Can't Touch This

I've been away from the blog for a while with no new posts or even comments to pick what seems to be only my brain...at the moment. With millions of music and video blogs, why choose mine? Well, I will tell you why! Because I continue to strive to give you not only the music of today, but music of yesterday and days to come. In doing so, it's important that I post not only electronic music but genres of all shapes and forms. If you love music, you love all music. It's always been a motto of mine and I continue to challenge anyone who believes differently. I should've been a lawyer. God knows I watch enough Boston Legal to be a supreme court judge.

So with that being noted, it's back to the gully-ness that started this blog. Sadly this summers coming to an end and soon all the young chaps and lassies will heading back to their respective cities for their high-priced educations and campus jazz. If this is you, a little tip from a friend. Don't ever tag the jazz club on bathurst. If you choose to do so, run like the wind because the jazz cats certainly do! Why I would ever do such a thing you ask? Life experiences. I pride myself on life experiences and you should too! Who needs a bucket list when you have a life long list of gully trips and silly nights under your belt. I'm into simple things. I've flown once in my lifetime and I've lived in the same house for 23 years. I often think of how many times I've walked down my street and how many nights I've spent under the same roof.

With a life full of sport and game, I've always been about my music. Ask any of my friends about The Eagles and they'll speak you of my undying love for their music. Growing up in a family that loves to jive and dance to classics really opened my eyes to the beauty of music. Whether it's the long drives to the cottage with my dad drumming the dashboard to Steely Dan and many others in our wood panel Pontiac station wagon or spending days in the sun on Toronto Island with close friends and cold beers, music is my warm hug and it always will be. So back to basics it is.

This one goes out to the people I love!

Old and New.Through and through. These tunes go out from me to you. Enjoy!

Mixtapes: DJ Anna Lunoe - Coming To America

Beauty. Talent. Style. Northern Sydney's own Anna Lunoe has played so many gigs in such an impossibly short span of time it’ll make your head spin. Supporting M.I.A? Done. Daft Punk? Lupe Fiasco? Check. Chromeo, Switch, Uffie, DJ Ayres, Robyn, Spankrock, Xzibit, Lil Jon, and Peaches. As well as home boys Ajax, Bang Gang, Cut Copy, Bumblebeez and Muscles. Just to name few. Plus to make life even more hectic, Anna has recently started touring all over the world as part of the Bumblebeez as well as part of the three-girl DJ posse called Hoops.

Living in New York for most of 2006, she frequented the club scene all over the States, learning the tricks of the trade from some of the best. Anna returned home stupidly excited with a new found confidence and a head full of new music. She started to turn heads and stop whippersnappers on dance floors in their tracks. Playing her own unique mix of everything she loves to shake it to- hip-hop, soul, hyphy, Baltimore club, dancehall, reggaeton, baile funk, electro, indie and disco – her musical influences are extensive and broad. The result is something so good, it could almost be fattening. Dig this new-ish little mixtape 'Coming To America' for a fresh bite of life on deck. Remember to look for new music and tour updates from this prominent party girl on her myspace! Enjoi :)

Late Greats

Townes Van Zandt
One of the greatest country and folk artists of his generation
March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997

Townes used to say, "Man, I could have been a Poet but this stupid music keeps coming with it." Townes was a funny guy.

He wrote some of the most stunningly introspective songs of our time. His songs evoke imagery and visions of otherworldly places and beauty. His songs reach a place in your soul few writers ever enter. The characters in Townes songs are usually the downtrodden, derelicts, drifters, whores and those less fortunate than most of us, though we can all identify with their "humanity" through Townes' words. He's gone to those dark places, so we don't have to. A Texan by birth and a traveler by nature, Townes Van Zandt’s dark country and folk ballads mirrored his own life of haunting truths Take a minute to pay homage to this late great. Take a lifetime even. I've always felt that life can be a dear friend or a worst enemy. Maybe we just live, learn and relate. Enjoy the remarkable documentary 'Be Here To Love Me' depicting this man's heartfelt life and times here and be sure to expand your music library with his great music.

The second video comes from hip-hop group The Foreign Exchange off their debut album, Connected. The group consists of Phonte from Little Brother and Nicolay, both highly suggested by yours truly! Kick back to this one with a splif and a cold brew. You deserve it!

Kenn Starr & Kev Brown

Years back some friends and I made our way downtown Hamilton to see some promising artists from Virginia who went under the moniker of the Low Budget Crew. Primarily the likes of Kenn Starr and Rapper/Producer Kev Brown, who had gained much attention in the hip-hop community for collaborations with the likes of Asheru and Talib Kweli. True lyricists and masters of their craft, the put on a show that was pure bliss. Not having the opportunity to get any of their music for myself at the time was a big lose.

Thankfully this recently changed as I picked up Kev Browns Random Joints album and Kenn Stars mixtape album, The Starr Report, which features Starrs collaborations with other artists in their new hometown of Washington, DC. Taking it back to the music I used to enjoy years ago has always been a good time in my eyes and I hope you see what I mean with these samples. Maybe you'll go out and do the same! Keep your eyes open for new albums from Low Budget Crew and keep supporting the music you love and life for!

Love Your Life

"I feel so sorry for myself. I'm incredible melodramatic and pessimistic.
Oh my god, fuck my life!"

Unfortunately, this attitude has been widespread through out the minds of young people these days. For the most part, the reasons behind these statements are quite juvenile and petty. So I've decided to come up with a moniker of my own. Love your life -- or -- LYL! For it is truly too short of an existence to walk around pouting and over exaggerating your every hardship.

Having a bad day? Put on some great music, get out of the house and make it happen. If you see a friend of yours with the attitude that what they're going through is so completely unbearable, then do your best to make them love their life. Troubles and sorrows aside, you have what it takes to make the best of your life. It's up to you to make it happen!

Here's some fun tracks to keep you busy and in the greatest of spirits this summer. Feel free to email me any suggestions or music you want up on the blog. I'm always open!

Mixtapes: Visitor- Valerie Mix

Unsigned lounge pop favourites of mine, Visitor, recently did up a dandy mix for Valerie that features a consistent party-pop track list I've been steadily enjoying these past few days. The London and South East United Kingdom natives have flown well under my rader for some time now and I'm more than thrilled to share their work with you. My taste for music continues to mold and shape into a kaleidoscope of colour and sound with Visitor taking their piece of the ever-changing puzzle.

Whether I'm lounging or partying, smiling or frowning, this mix has fit and bonded with my many emotions and keeps drawing me back for another play. Have a listen and hear for yourself. Be sure to check out their myspace for updates and possibly a show near you! Until next time.."I kick flows for ya, kick down doh's for ya, even left all my mothafuckin hoes for ya!" One love.

Gyspy And The Cat

The Gypsy And The Cat are a pair of music men worth calling home about this summer. Heck, tell all your friends about this wonderful two-piece from Victoria, Australia. With a smooth, soft rock and electro combination, you can easily pick apart their musical influences cited on their myspace. Hints of Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkle and many others shine through on each piece of wonderful they've blessed the blog worlds with thus far.

Perhaps they can better introduce themselves...

"Good day, turn left, good day look right. Enters a gypsy and a cat. We are the ones who augment from Melbourne town, and wander through the night, guiding your dreams, away from fiends, in search of time by candle light. Have you seen us in the haze of the abyss, as you gaze through the moonlit night outside your foggy window light. We hide from time to time so may you hear our chime, and we hope it may find your heart like star light from such height. Enjoy our crescendo of melody and rhyme, we love having you here."

Take these tracks to work, family picnics, the beach and anywhere you feel happiest. I truely believe the direction these two lads are heading is as promising as a campfire with 0ldtime friends. Embrace and share this magic today, tonight and in the future. Enjoy!

All You Hear Is Radio Goo-Goo

Over the years, I've become increasingly annoyed by local radio stations and TV shows who pump out crap content all day long. Now I understand that they play to the masses but popular music (or what they see as popular music) isn't what I look to them to provide. Local stations and shows should update us on local talent and strive to have these artists heard. Major stations continue to play the same crap content all day everyday until even my mom and dad know the words to the latest Lady Gaga shit mix. That being said, I'd like to give praise to the stations that still have this outlook and thank them for pushing quality music through the air waves for people like me to enjoy. Local college and university stations have caught my attention in past years and I've been known to listen weekly to hip-hop and house/electro broadcasts. In short, I urge you to check out some nearby stations who could be flying below your radar. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I think you'll find today's content to be both uplifting and thought provoking. Voila!

Miike Snow's 'Burial' off their debut self-titled album. I really enjoyed the direction this new band has gone with this video. The reality of it all is a very refreshing approach. Thanks to
Daniel Wirtberg & Jonas Rudström for directing this great video.

Next we have Air France's 'No Excuses' of their EP titled No Way Down. I just recently featured this track for download and I suggest if you haven't given it a listen, to do so! The video is pretty simple and features a solo surfer in his element. I wish to feel a freedom like this someday. I've also included their video for the song 'Collapsing At Your Doorstep' which was also featured in past posts.

Canada Day

Oh Canada! I've spent most of my day watching the history channel tucked out of the rain and gloominess that has betaken us on Canada's 142nd Birthday, but in this time I've indulged my mind with the history of our many great innovations, courageous soldiers of war and above all great people of the incredibly patriotic country we live in and love. I urge you to do the same. Get out tonight and show your colours no matter the weather. Light your works of fire and celebrate a country that has been much like a warm hug on a cold winters eve for people of all cultures. To some it may mean shelter and refuge from a world that ceased to accept them. To others this country has provided new hopes and opportunities for a better future. Give thanks to all those who made this possible for us and let's continue to keep Canada a peaceful and glorious place. As a tribute to great canadians and country, I have compiled a series of photographs that I hope you enjoy as much as I have.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Don't Wake The Scarecrow

The Felice Brothers are a folk rock/country band from Upstate New York founded in 2006. Consisting of five main members, three brothers and two friends, the band received their start playing in the New York City subway, but their musical experience started much earlier. The sons of a carpenter, they would play together on Sundays at their father's afternoon barbecues. They stayed in a little apartment in Brooklyn and would play at the subway stations near 42nd Street and Union Square in Greenwich Village.

Recently, they have toured with the likes of Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band and released their second major release Yonder Is The Clock to high review in April of this year. Frankie's Gun is perhaps their most recognizable song to date, most accurately described as "a story of roadside betrayal delivered in the weathered voice of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Lou Reed, propelled by a rambling organ possibly found on the floor of a rancid saloon at the turn of the 20Th century". I've also really taken to their song Don't Wake The Scarecrow from their self-titled album. Be sure to listen in to these true gems and prepare to be dazzled!

Shinichi Osawa

This Canada Day it is with utmost importance that you get yourselves out to The Guvernment in Toronto for their hosting of Japanese electro/house innovator Shinichi Osawa. This kick ass canuck celebration will leave you crawling back for more. I promise! Osawa's latest album The One was recently released on Dim Mak Records where his proven rapport lives well up to worldwide standard.
As a musician/DJ/producer/composer, Osawa has collaborated with international talents Digitalism and Felix Da Housecat, as well as up and coming acts in Japan. That being said, the beauty about his work is that it's truly hard to find a track you don't like. Full fledged synths and hard hitting bass are an understatement. If you want to get the goods and get it quick, I suggest you get out to Toronto and check out this promising party. Check the link for ticket info and more great events. Of course, it's not my style to leave you hanging, so here's a big sample of what you're getting yourselves into. Drop by his myspace for more great tracks and new releases!
