Mixtapes: DJ Anna Lunoe - Coming To America

Beauty. Talent. Style. Northern Sydney's own Anna Lunoe has played so many gigs in such an impossibly short span of time it’ll make your head spin. Supporting M.I.A? Done. Daft Punk? Lupe Fiasco? Check. Chromeo, Switch, Uffie, DJ Ayres, Robyn, Spankrock, Xzibit, Lil Jon, and Peaches. As well as home boys Ajax, Bang Gang, Cut Copy, Bumblebeez and Muscles. Just to name few. Plus to make life even more hectic, Anna has recently started touring all over the world as part of the Bumblebeez as well as part of the three-girl DJ posse called Hoops.

Living in New York for most of 2006, she frequented the club scene all over the States, learning the tricks of the trade from some of the best. Anna returned home stupidly excited with a new found confidence and a head full of new music. She started to turn heads and stop whippersnappers on dance floors in their tracks. Playing her own unique mix of everything she loves to shake it to- hip-hop, soul, hyphy, Baltimore club, dancehall, reggaeton, baile funk, electro, indie and disco – her musical influences are extensive and broad. The result is something so good, it could almost be fattening. Dig this new-ish little mixtape 'Coming To America' for a fresh bite of life on deck. Remember to look for new music and tour updates from this prominent party girl on her myspace! Enjoi :)

Late Greats

Townes Van Zandt
One of the greatest country and folk artists of his generation
March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997

Townes used to say, "Man, I could have been a Poet but this stupid music keeps coming with it." Townes was a funny guy.

He wrote some of the most stunningly introspective songs of our time. His songs evoke imagery and visions of otherworldly places and beauty. His songs reach a place in your soul few writers ever enter. The characters in Townes songs are usually the downtrodden, derelicts, drifters, whores and those less fortunate than most of us, though we can all identify with their "humanity" through Townes' words. He's gone to those dark places, so we don't have to. A Texan by birth and a traveler by nature, Townes Van Zandt’s dark country and folk ballads mirrored his own life of haunting truths Take a minute to pay homage to this late great. Take a lifetime even. I've always felt that life can be a dear friend or a worst enemy. Maybe we just live, learn and relate. Enjoy the remarkable documentary 'Be Here To Love Me' depicting this man's heartfelt life and times here and be sure to expand your music library with his great music.

A Couple Gems

Ma-ma-ma-ma! Heres a couple fun videos I came across late-night in search of beach-bound heaters for my day to come. Not too sure the history of the first, just a fun, let loose video for you to groove to. Giver!

The second video comes from hip-hop group The Foreign Exchange off their debut album, Connected. The group consists of Phonte from Little Brother and Nicolay, both highly suggested by yours truly! Kick back to this one with a splif and a cold brew. You deserve it!

Kenn Starr & Kev Brown

Years back some friends and I made our way downtown Hamilton to see some promising artists from Virginia who went under the moniker of the Low Budget Crew. Primarily the likes of Kenn Starr and Rapper/Producer Kev Brown, who had gained much attention in the hip-hop community for collaborations with the likes of Asheru and Talib Kweli. True lyricists and masters of their craft, the put on a show that was pure bliss. Not having the opportunity to get any of their music for myself at the time was a big lose.

Thankfully this recently changed as I picked up Kev Browns Random Joints album and Kenn Stars mixtape album, The Starr Report, which features Starrs collaborations with other artists in their new hometown of Washington, DC. Taking it back to the music I used to enjoy years ago has always been a good time in my eyes and I hope you see what I mean with these samples. Maybe you'll go out and do the same! Keep your eyes open for new albums from Low Budget Crew and keep supporting the music you love and life for!

Love Your Life

"I feel so sorry for myself. I'm incredible melodramatic and pessimistic.
Oh my god, fuck my life!"

Unfortunately, this attitude has been widespread through out the minds of young people these days. For the most part, the reasons behind these statements are quite juvenile and petty. So I've decided to come up with a moniker of my own. Love your life -- or -- LYL! For it is truly too short of an existence to walk around pouting and over exaggerating your every hardship.

Having a bad day? Put on some great music, get out of the house and make it happen. If you see a friend of yours with the attitude that what they're going through is so completely unbearable, then do your best to make them love their life. Troubles and sorrows aside, you have what it takes to make the best of your life. It's up to you to make it happen!

Here's some fun tracks to keep you busy and in the greatest of spirits this summer. Feel free to email me any suggestions or music you want up on the blog. I'm always open!

Mixtapes: Visitor- Valerie Mix

Unsigned lounge pop favourites of mine, Visitor, recently did up a dandy mix for Valerie that features a consistent party-pop track list I've been steadily enjoying these past few days. The London and South East United Kingdom natives have flown well under my rader for some time now and I'm more than thrilled to share their work with you. My taste for music continues to mold and shape into a kaleidoscope of colour and sound with Visitor taking their piece of the ever-changing puzzle.

Whether I'm lounging or partying, smiling or frowning, this mix has fit and bonded with my many emotions and keeps drawing me back for another play. Have a listen and hear for yourself. Be sure to check out their myspace for updates and possibly a show near you! Until next time.."I kick flows for ya, kick down doh's for ya, even left all my mothafuckin hoes for ya!" One love.
