Tiga Interview

I came across this interview tonight on Too Many Sebastians and thought I'd share it with you. I'm not sure if Tiga is actually of this nature but the interview shows him as an artist of great arrogance. I like to believe this is but a joke and not his real outlook. Check it and let me know what you think!

Pseudo Intellectuals

Coming out of Buffalo, Pseudo Intellectuals are Nick Zero, Tone Atlas and Dj Cutler. They can be found alongside emcee Sick as the more recognized hip-hop group Pseudo Slang - a new edition to the Fat Beats Record label. I've had the pleasure of seeing them a few times live and would suggest you do the same! Peep the videos and their myspace for more tunes and info.

Children Of The Corn

I like to think that my taste for music is like a child's taste for sweets --widespread! With this in mind, I've decided to reach back--way back--to the music that paved the way for today's hip-hop favourites.

Children of the Corn was a hip-hop group formed in the early 1990s consisting of neighborhood friends/Harlem rappers Mase (then known as Murda Mase), Big L, Cam'ron (then known as Killa Cam), McGruff and Bloodshed.

Big L made the group, as he pushed Mase and Cam'ron off the streets and into the studio, as well as Bloodshed, who was Cam'ron's cousin. They released over 30 songs under the name Children of the Corn, as they tried for a record deal. They got paid any way they could, rhyming for local DJs and selling mixtapes out of their trunks.

Although very close to a deal, Mase and Cam'ron left the group to pursue basketball careers and later Mase would sign with P. Diddy to become part of Bad Boy Records. Cam'ron went through college and was ready to get a deal with Big L and Bloodshed, when tragically Bloodshed was killed in a car accident in Harlem at the age of 23. Big L and Cam'ron both went on to sign record deals as solo artists.

In 1999, Big L was murdered at the age of 24 and it became increasingly difficult for the group to become successful. The lyrics in these songs pay homage to the American dream seen through the eyes of Harlem's finest emcee's. Explicit and live, these songs turned myself, and many people like me, onto hip-hop from this era. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Enjoy!

Ruby Jean And The Thoughtful Bees

Ruby Jean and The Thoughtful Bees are a motley assortment from Halifax who piece together all the organic ingredients needed for all night dance parties and occasions of the sort. They describe their influences as "high pitched noises only dogs can hear, canine reactions to high pitched noises that only they can hear, train whistles, never ending break beats, foggy days, delay, catapulting swing sets, small insects, white rabbits, ladders, black cats that shed, musky smells, strange humming noises, beards, heavy metal." At first read this all seems to be nothing but a cluster fuck of information with no relation to music...but to each his own I guess. Jon Crowell is the brains; writing, arranging and producing the beats and bleeps that swarm around the ensemble, and mixing all it's component elements live on stage. Rebekah Higgs (solo artist, Outside Music) is the lungs of Ruby Jean, backing up her ecstatic, confident stage presence and audacious style with harmonies and effects created by sampling her own voice in real time. Guitarist Jason Vautour (Jon Epworth & The Improvements, Alright Already) is the arms, channeling both his Madonna and Napalm Death Cd's to conjure drop-tuned-yet-danceable guitar counterpoint against pulsing synths. Sean MacGillivray (Alright Already, Jenn Grant) is the legs of the outfit, re-interpreting looped drums as real ones on a traditional rock drum kit. Collectively they're a force to be reckoned with, rocking stages across the country with their alter ego-esque performances. Another great reason to tune in and follow all that's coming from the east coast music scene. Bitter yet sweet, Ruby Jean And The Thoughtful Bees will rock your party like no other. Enjoy the video and music samples provided and watch for a show near you!

French electro group Make The Girl Dance are coming in hot with their new video Baby, Baby, Baby. I don't know too much about them so far but I'm really feeling their sound. The video features an in depth look at the City of Paris and the women that embrace it. I'll do my best to keep an ear out for them in the future. Peep the song samples and play em' loud! Until then, Baby, Baby, Baby!

Tom Vek

London’s eclectic one-man band Tom Vek combines electronic music with indie rock, punk with dance, and influences like new wave and garage. As a teen in the mid-’90s, Vek was inspired by grunge and began making rock along the lines of Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam; before that, he backed his guitarist father on bass and drums in their practice space/garage. When his family acquired a reel-to-reel tape recorder when he was 14, Vek began recording his music, which evolved from grungy rock to Warp-and Ninja Tune-influenced electronica as the ’90s came to a close.Vek had been sending his music to a friend of the family (who happened to be Alex Cooper, the longtime drummer for Katrina & The Waves) who in turn sent Vek’s latest, electronica-inspired music to his cousin (who happened to be Tim Lee, the head of quirky electronic label Tummy Touch). Lee signed Vek to the label, and in 2001 the 7” There’s Only One Thing Left Now became Vek’s first officially released work. Tummy Touch agreed to release a full-length from Vek, which he began working on in between his graphic design studies at St. Martins. However, Vek’s music had morphed again, moving from delicate electronica to something sharper-edged and more rock-based. Singles such as If You Want heralded this new direction, as did gigs supporting acts like Bloc Party and Engineers. Vek’s debut album, We Have Sound, was released in the U.K. in spring 2005 via Tummy Touch. I came across his music at the time of it's release and just recently got back into his work. His unique style is widespread across the album as each song seems to hint at different genres and moods. I hope these songs inspire you to look back on your own music delights from the past and perhaps rekindle a love once lost. Enjoy it and rock it in!

Our Life

As the years go by, my life continues to be enriched by my surroundings. Each day seems like another brick in the wall and at times just another stripe on my shoulder (or in this case another stripe on my zebra). I've known days where I wish I could just ride out of this town and never look back. At times I can't picture myself anywhere else. I've included some videos that can better portray these feelings of mine and I hope they help you reflect on your life with new hopes for the future. Everyone has a dream, it's up to you to wake up and make it happen!

This Oakley's skate video features
some tasty California street skating and I'm happy to share it with all of you. The song featured in this video is Latryx-Lady Don't Tek No and it's been a favourite of mine for some time now. Oh the sweet memories. Lock it in!

Sigur Ros's melodic and truly genuine sound has been the backbone for countless outstanding films in past years and they have a dandy of their own to add to the collection. With songs being featured in trailers and virtually any show with a slow pan of mountains or streams, this four piece band from Iceland speak in a language all their own. Literally. Vonlenska is the term used to describe the unintelligible lyrics sung by the band, which is a language that lacks distinct words or meanings. By using rhythmic and melodic elements of singing, they eliminate the need for conceptual word. Listen in and marvel as the video feature Heima exonerates Sigur Ro's return home as they perform a series of free surprise outdoor concerts throughout Iceland. The documentary profiles the band in various venues such as abandoned bunkers and community coffee shops, an intimate experience that no music lover should miss. Enjoy the trailer and buy the DVD!

According to music critic Patrick Donavan "Fleetwood Mac is one of the great lost blues bands, the quintessence of California soft-rock and LA excess or one of the greatest pop groups of all time." See why with this classic live performance of Dreams from their highly praised 1977 album Rumours. "When the rain washes you clean you'll know." So dream on. This our life!

All Heart

This Hockey Hall of Fame video celebrates the great hockey career of Bobby Orr. With the Stay Trues (my beer league hockey team) taking the ice for the first time tomorrow evening, I can't help but hope that his magic is in our hearts. A wise hockey mom once said "shoot, score, play hockey!" and that's exactly what we'll do. Until next time, keep your stick on the ice!

James Yuill

James Yuill recently caught my attention on A-Trak's album Infinity+1 and although I am new to his music, I've been overly pleased with his work. The London based soloist fuses emotional songwriting influences like Radiohead and Nick Drake with beat and rhythm influences such as Justice and Aphex Twins. With a new and growing scene, it's evident that James Yuill has created a folktronic experience that won't be overlooked. Independent label Moshi Moshi Records (Bloc Party, Au Revoire Simone, Hot Chip) is launching his new album in North America on May 26th and I hope you show him your support. Included today is a pair of videos from his upcoming release Turning Down Water For Air as well as a few songs to give you a bite. Lock it in!
